Verbally abusive bosses tolerated, study says

unhappyWriting on her blog at NWJobs, Michelle Goodman describes a new study at the University of Iowa on verbally abusive bosses. Researchers found that so long as they are perceived as effective, their peers and employees will view them as effective.

If true, this finding suggests that many workers are willing to overlook a manager’s level of emotional intelligence in weighing his or her impact on the business. Nevertheless, nobody is obligated to work in an abusive workplace, so workers are justified for looking elsewhere if they see signs of abuse tolerated.
